Biography: Previously, he served in the federal government for thirty years. His career involved assignments in the Pentagon, the intelligence community, the State Department, and the White House. During the administration of Ronald Reagan he was Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Intelligence. In 1989, President Bush nominated him to the Senate as Assistant Secretary of State, a position he held until moving to the White House in 1992. He served in the White House for the first President Bush, President Clinton, and the incumbent President Bush. That service set a record for continuous tenure on the National Security Council staff. Among the positions he held there were Special Assistant to the President for Global Affairs and later National Coordinator for Security and Counter-terrorism, and Special Advisor to the President on Cybersecurity. |
